Shall I tell the interviewer that my degree is 3r

Hello [NAME]

For many of us, sometimes things do not always go the way we plan. For some graduates, to find out that they have a 3rd class degree can be extremely disappointing to say the least and there could be a whole host of reasons why this was the result. As you know, many employers specify that they are looking for 2:1 and above for specific roles so what can you do? Should you tell them about your 3rd – is it worth still applying?

The answer is that you should always be honest. There may be a number of reasons why your result was lower than you thought but it is still a degree – and don’t forget that. Be clear about why this was the result and what you would do differently to get a higher grade. It may be that personal factors affected your study plans – or that you were ill – or a member of your family was ill – it could be anything. But this shouldn’t affect the rest of your life.

Still apply for the jobs you want and give a brief explanation in your application as to why you have achieved a 3rd class degree. Highlight to them your abilities in other areas and about the things you have done well. Most employers will respect a candidate that is able to demonstrate what they could do differently so be up front and confident.

There are a large number of well known personalities that have 3rd class degrees including Hugh Laurie and Carol Vorderman – and it hasn’t done their careers any harm.
