We have listed some typical questions that you may be asked under each of these categories.

The Five Worst Questions

  • Tell me about yourself?
  • What is your major weakness?
  • What do you see yourself doing in five years time?
  • How would your friends describe you?
  • What has been your biggest failure?

Questions about your course or degree

  • How did you come to choose your degree/discipline?
  • What class of degree are you expecting? Why?
  • Your A-levels seem disappointing, was there a reason for that?
  • How will your studies relate to your work?
  • What is your strongest/weakest subject? Why?
  • What have you contributed to the university?
  • What have you enjoyed most at university?
  • What have your learnt from your work experience?

Career Questions

  • Where do you see yourself in 5/10 years time? 
  • What do you look for in a job? 
  • What plans do you have to gain further qualifications?
  • What are you looking for in a career?
  • What attracted you to this industry/sector?

Potential Employer Questions

  • How much do you know about our organisation? -
  • Why did you apply to us?
  • Why should we select you? - you don't know anything about the other candidates.  attributes.
  • Where are you prepared to work? Do you mind travelling a lot?
  • What do you suppose are the main problems and opportunities facing our organisation/industry/sector at this time?
  • Personality Questions

    • What are your strengths? 
    • What are your weaknesses? 
    • How would your friends describe How would your friends describe you?
    • What do you look for in a good manager? What sort of manager do you think you will make? 
    • What evidence do you have that you can handle our different classes of customers? 
    • Do you think you can cope with the professional examinations?
    • What responsibility do you hold/have held? 

    Questions on Interests

    • How do you spend you spare time?
    • How do you spend your vacations?
    • What has your membership of the ………… committee involved?
    • Have you had to deal with awkward people in organising these activities?
    • How have your interests changed since coming to university?
    • What newspaper do you read? Why?
    • What have your read recently that has taken your interest?
    Personal Questions Can be inappropriate - but be polite. 

    Your questions'

    • Is there anything else you would like to ask me?
    • Show interest - ask about job, organisation, employees, products, processes
    • Last question: When can I expect to here from you? What happens next?
    • Don't ask about pay, pensions, other perks. It is not appropriate at this stage.
